Private bus operators' fare high

Private bus operators started fleecing the rural passengers with fare hike, without proper permission from the competent authorities. They have increased the fare arbitrarily all of a sudden without any prior information to the public.

Heated arguments between the passengers and crew members have become a common scene in many routes from and to Krishnagiri, such as Tirupathur, Hosur and Dharmapuri and Uthanagarai in the district.

The fare hike by the private bus operators was also raised at the farmers’ grievances meeting by Mr. S. Alagirisamy, District Secretary of the BSNL Employees Union of the combined districts of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri, on Thursday.

While replying to the complaint, Collector Mr. Arun Roy said that he too received some complaints from the public and the Regional Transport Officers were asked to check this menace immediately. Show-cause notice was also issued to one of the operators in this regard.

Further to this, a survey conducted by this correspondent on Friday morning revealed that many private bus operators are fleecing the public despite a severe warning by Mr. N. Palanivelu, Regional Transport Operator, in September.

A private bus plying between Hosur and Krishnagiri was charging Rs. 18 on Friday (original fare was Rs. 15.50). Another operator collected Rs. 11 from Pochampalli to Krishnagiri as against the original fare of Rs. 10. Like wise Rs. 6 was collected from Bargur to Krishnagiri as against the original fare of Rs. 5 and Rs. 8 instead of Rs. 7 from Karimangalam to Krishnagiri. Of the four operators, one issued ticket even without the name of the transport.

Mr. N. Palanivelu told The Hindu that he was asked to take action against the private operators by Collector Mr. V. Arun Roy on September 27. Upon his instruction he had convened a meeting of the private operators the next day and instructed not to increase the fare, failing which, severe action would be initiated. A circular was also issued to all the private operators in this regard, the following day.

The Inspectors attached to the Office of the RTO were conducting surprise checks and slapped fines for overload and other violations etc.

Mr. Palanivelu also assured that he will look into this issue immediately and will take suitable action in this regard.

D. Ravindran, District Secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist) told The Hindu that it is an act of injustice to the rural masses. Unofficially the government had given its green signal for hiking the fare to the private operators, he alleged. He said, the party is vehemently opposing the fare hike.

Pochampalli school set on fire after boy's death

A mob went on the rampage and set on fire a private school in Pochampalli in Krishnagiri district of western Tamil Nadu as a 11th class boy was run over by the school bus right in front of the building on Monday morning.

Ten rooms, including seven classrooms were damaged in the incident, but the 1,300 students escaped without injury. As the angry mob entered the school campus, the police safely escorted the students out of their classrooms. The school correspondent is absconding and a search is on, police said.

"No student is injured. We safely brought them out of the classrooms," Bargur DSP K Gunasekaran told TOI.
Around 8.40am, 16-year-old Suresh Krishnan had reached the entrance of the Anna Arivagam school on the Pochampalli Main Road when one of the school buses hit him head-on.

The boy lay dead in a pool of blood right in front of his school. The bus was just coming out of the campus after dropping about 50 students when the tragedy took place. "The boy suddenly swerved left and the bus driver could not control the vehicle and hit him," said a police official.

Within 10 minutes, the bereaved father Krishnan, who is a tailor in Pochampalli, arrived with his relatives and friends and demanded action against the school authorities. Police reinforcements arrived and the local police personnel tried to pacify him. As the crowds swelled and the situation threatened to go out of control, the police asked the students to leave the campus immediately.

While the students were scampering out, a mob entered the campus and barged into the office of correspondent K Syed. As he was not available, the mob set ablaze his office, computer and records rooms on the ground floor.

The degree certificates of some of the teachers which were kept in the records room were also burnt by the mob.
Then they entered the first storey of the three-storeyed school building and torched seven classrooms. All the tables and chairs in the classrooms were burnt.

Meanwhile, additional police reinforcements descended on the campus and drove away the rioting crowd. Fire fighters too rushed in and battled the blaze for nearly four hours. The police arrested bus driver Muvendran, 30, for rash and negligent driving.

The English-medium school was sought after by parents in the villages in and around Pochampalli and Bargur. Police suspect the mob attacked the school because the correspondent was known to be strict and had refused admission for the children of some of the locally influential people. Police are searching for the miscreants who went on the campus rampage.

Sri Lankan Tamil refugees fight for MBBS

Chennai: Nagaraj, a 17-year-old staying at Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district, scored a cut-off percentile of 197.75 out of 200 in the 12th standard. But he did not get admission to the MBBS course in a government college: Reason: he is the son of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees A Karuppaiah and Annakilli, who arrived in India from Vavuniya in the early 1990s.

Though born in India, Nagaraj does not have citizenship rights because of the refugee status of his parents. Fortunately for Nagaraj, Agaram Foundation (founded by film actor Suriya) intervened and ensured his admission to a private medical college under the management quota.

The foundation has taken up the onus of paying Nagaraj’s fee. “I approached the foundation asking them to sponsor my engineering education as my second choice. I knew that pursuing medical education in a private college will be impossible. But thanks to Agaram, I can now hope to become a doctor,” a relieved Nagaraj told DNA.

Agaram officials agreed that Nagaraj had applied for aid for pursuing engineering. “We have a stringent process of selecting beneficiaries, which includes a visit to their homes. On interacting with him, we got to know that his real aspiration was to become a doctor,” the officials said.

But there are scores of children like Nagaraj whose aspirations of professional education will remain unfulfilled despite scoring well. According to the Organisation for Eelam Refugees’ Rehabilitation (OfERR), there are nearly 20,000 school-going children among Sri Lankan refugees.

Ramanathan, a 24-year-old staying at the Trichy camp, has a sorry tale to tell. A class topper, he too wanted to pursue medicine and got admission in a private college in Salem in 2005. He was supported by his brother from Sri Lanka, but had to discontinue his studies after his brother died.

“My parents first came to India in 1986 and went back when they were told the ethnic conflict had ended. They were forced to return in 1990 and we have been staying at the Trichy camp since then. I completed my 12th in 2004 and joined a private medical college in Salem in 2005. But I had to discontinue it after my brother died in 2006. My mother returned to Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, there was a change in the college management and the new management demanded the full fee,” he lamented.

Ramanathan, who is now staying with his aged father at the Trichy camp, works in a provision store. He is now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry.

OfERR director (advocacy) M Sakkariyas said every year his organisation pleads with the Centre to provide the refugee children admissions in professional courses. “We have so far not got a positive response from the Centre,” he said.

There is some good news though. The state recently announced that the refugee children could seek admission in colleges affiliated to Anna University through counselling process. The counselling is in August 11 and 12.

Israeli agronomists train Tamil Nadu mango growers

These agronomists study the trees, which are over three decades old and suggest pruning of certain parts of the trees, sans causing any damage.

"Mango is a major fruit crop of Tamil Nadu. Nearly 1, 00,000 hectares of land is under mango cultivation. The average yield of the state is nearly eight to 10 metric tonnes per hectare, whereas the average yield of Israel country is 20 to 25 metric tonnes per hectare. They are getting three times of yield than us. Hence, we are very much interested to adopt the technologies that has (have) been followed in Israel," said Subbian, Joint Director of Horticulture Department, Krishnagiri.

Under the National Horticulture Mission, the Indian government has procured two machines used in the Canopy Management Pruning System Machine.

Kidnapped baby rescued;

A kidnapped male baby was rescued by a special team of police within 24 hours of the occurrence of the crime on Wednesday.

Police sources said that R. Ramakka of Kamarajar Colony in Berigai in Krishnagiri district lost her three-month-old child at the new bus stand in Krishnagiri on Tuesday.

The child was allegedly kidnapped when Ramakka left the baby to the care of Dhanalakshmi, hailing from Krishnan Koil Street in Krishnagiri, to buy food for her daughter.

On return, she found the woman missing with the baby. She lodged a complaint with the Krishnagiri town police station.

The police traced Dhanalakshmi and on enquiry she confessed that she had handed over the infant to a couple Siva and Girija, residing at Perambur in Chennai.

On direction from A.G. Babu, Superintendent of Police, a special team rushed to Chennai and rescued the baby and handed over to Ramakka on Wednesday.

Dhanalakshmi, Rani and Girija were arrested by Krishnagiri town police.

Higher mango prices leave a sour taste in the mouth

Unusually this mango season has seen lesser arrivals and higher prices, taking the fruit beyond the reach of most of the commoners in Karur district.

With the arrival of summer, several seasonal fruits make their appearance. They include varieties of mangoes, cucumber, watermelon, palm fruit besides coconut from several places. They not only quench the thirst of parched throats but also tickle the taste buds, enticing the people with their everlasting appeal.

Traditional horticulturists say that the yield would be good in alternative years, with one dull year interspersing two good seasons. But this year has fallen in the low ebb as far as yield and consequently arrivals are concerned, pushing up the prices across all varieties from common varieties to exquisite ones.

“This crop season has not been beneficial to us as too hot a climate during the flowering period, windy and rainy germination stage conspired with hot sunny weather conditions during the fruit growth cycle hampered yield,'' points out working president of Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association and major mango grower Mahadanapuram V. Rajaram.

There have been very heavy losses in the mango gardens raised at Mahadanapuram, Krishnarayapuram, Karungalapalli, Thanneerpalli and Nadupatti in Karur district. The returns have been poor and the produce is not fetching us remunerative prices either, aver the growers. In fact some growers say that they have been offered only half the regular lease rates, courtesy the lesser yield in the gardens in several areas.

In some other areas of Karur district, the yield has been less than one-third plunging the growers into despair. “What to do we are left to the mercy of nature and it has played truant this year,'' rues C. Govindasamy of Karur noting that his gardens have got him only half the regular lease prices and that too after much bargaining.

Whatever was left of the gardens was cleaned up by the recent gale and strong winds followed by rain over the past three days.

As for the retail customers and common man, those fruits that were selling at Rs. 20 to 30 a kg have become dearer by another Rs. 20 or more as the arrivals dwindled. Sendura variety sells for Rs. 30 and 40 a kg, Banganapalli Rs. 50 to 60 a kg, Alphonsa Rs. 60 to Rs. 70 a kg and Himam Pasanth Rs. 100 a kg.

The arrivals even from Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri besides those from Andhra Pradesh have been pretty less and so the price is reigning high, point out retailers who are hit hard and were finding it difficult to to cart sale and head load sales.

Scant rainfall hits export of mango pulp in Tamil Nadu

Incidentally, Krishnagiri is the second largest exporter of pulp in India and second largest producer of mangoes in the world.

Krishnagiri and the neighbouring Dharmapuri district boasts of more than 45,000 hectares of mango orchards, with a total annual output of mangoes in the range of over 300,000 tonnes.

In 2009, around 11,250 tonnes of pulp were exported to foreign countries.

Archana Institute of Technology 'malpractice' canceled 1st sem Anna Univirsity exams

Anna University-Coimbatore has cancelled first semester examinations held at the Archana Institute of Technology in Krishnagiri.

The decision follows the findings of a committee appointed to inquire into allegations of malpractices that took place in the first semester examinations held in January 2010. Vice-Chancellor (officiate) T. Kannadasan told a press conference here on Tuesday that the university had received information that mass copying had taken place in physics, chemistry and mathematics examinations.

This was confirmed by the committee, which concluded there was “very strong evidence” of such malpractices. Faculty from the PSG Institute of Technology, Coimbatore Institute of Technology and Knowledge Institute of Technology and a Syndicate member were part of the investigation team.

Registrar S. Palaniswami said more than 85 physics answer scripts had similar answers with same mistakes. Further decision, including the date of re-examination, would be taken only after the investigation was complete and the Senate took a decision. Mr. Palaniswami said the committee was yet to talk to invigilators, the university representative who was present during the examinations and others concerned. It would require a few more sittings to arrive at the final decision.

Mr. Kannadasan said the university had sent a notice a couple of days ago to the engineering college seeking an explanation. The college was yet to respond. The university would also issue show-cause notice to disaffiliate the college. In addition to the action against malpractices, the university had also issued a notice to the college seeking explanation for claims it had made in advertisements.

The Vice-Chancellor (officiate) said the college had claimed cent per cent pass while two of the 124 students had failed.

Krishnagiri District Website contain Outdated information

Need for revision: A look at the ‘contact us' page of the Krishnagiri district website, http://krishnagiri.nic.in, reveals several discrepancies. The page still shows S. Nagarajan, who was transferred before May 2009, as the District Revenue Officer. However, another government website correctly shows P. Prabhakaran as the District Revenue Officer.

The websites of the district maintained by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), New Delhi, with inputs provided by NIC officials in the district and state, contain many discrepancies.

Though the district has been a pioneer in e-governance, the information in the website regarding top officials remains outdated. If one follows the link to the district's webpage from the State Government website, www.tn.gov.in, the page reveals several mistakes. Among top officials, only the Collector's name, V.K. Shanmugam, is mentioned correctly.

The content in the ‘contact us' page is also confusing.

Information on other officials has not been updated in the Government Officers page in the website maintained by NIC at Chennai and New Delhi. These officials include the District Revenue Officer P.
